Love. Surrender. Rest.
On intimacy and journeying
Matthew 11:29 says,
"Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls."
The word that stayed with me was "learn."
When you think about it, the closest picture many of us have is a healthy romantic relationship. Love isn't just about feelings; it's about intentionally learning another person. You pay attention to what makes them smile, what hurts them, what they love, what they dislike, their strengths, their weaknesses, their dreams, and even their flaws. You keep discovering them because you love them, and you want to grow with them.
That's the invitation Jesus gives us. He doesn't simply say, "Believe in Me." He says, "Learn of Me."
Learning Jesus requires time. It requires presence, it requires intentionality, it's choosing to sit with Him, to listen to Him through His Word, to observe His heart, His character, His ways, and to allow Him to shape yours.
The beautiful thing is that this relationship isn't one-sided. Jesus isn't asking us to pursue someone who is distant or unavailable. His arms are always open. He has already made Himself known, and every time we come to Him, He reveals more of Himself. He patiently teaches, corrects, comforts, and loves us.
Just as we willingly invest time in understanding the people we love, Jesus invites us to invest that same intentionality in knowing Him.
And then comes the promise:
"You will find rest for your souls."
Not because life suddenly becomes easy, but because there is a rest that comes from walking closely with the One who knows you completely and loves you perfectly.
Maybe that's what our souls have been longing for all along; not just to know about Jesus, but to truly learn Him.
